4to.[πii] 1-124, 131, 14-234, lithographed additional title and 71 plates and maps numbered 1-72 (nos 14 &15 used for the folding plate of Athens) Black & white lithographs. Some spotting throughout effecting some text and plates Plate XiX heavily spotted. Quarter calf gilt over marbled boards. Head of spine repaired, joints rubbed.

The work consists of a series of articles about ancient Greek life, monuments and antiquities, each accompanied by a plate. The plates show views, maps, monuments and statues.
A number of the plates are signed by I Brodtman and are new lithographic versions of earlier plates; some of the architectural plates are after Stuart & Revett. Other of the plates are after Leake ,Pirenesi ,Visconti Choisel Gouffier &c

The view of Athens ( plates XIV & XV) shows the Acropolis above the busy Ottoman town, with many minarets showing the fortified walls and the Roman antiquities, and looking across the sea to the Peloponnesus. An unusual view.
